If you or your organisation believe that you have the stamina, willpower, strength and endurance to compete at the Dalriada Festival, then this is for you!

IMPORTANT NOTE: All competitors must be physically fit and have sufficient experience in participating at similar events. (Excluding It's A Knockout)

We are excited to be bringing back the Northern Ireland WIFE CARRYING CHAMPIONSHIPS as part of this years Dalriada Festival on 14th and 15th July following a hugely popular competition in 2017 which received international acclaim.

This competition is open to all, however a certain degree of fitness is advisable. Registration is FREE and there are some top prizes to be won!

Wife carrying originated in the UK over twelve centuries ago, on 8 June 793AD, when Viking raiders rampaged into Lindisfarne on the northeast coast of what is now England, destroying the monastary and most likely carrying off any unwilling local wenches. Such wife carrying (-off) continued intermittently for around 300 years. Wife Carrying was re-introduced into the UK by the UK Wife Carrying Race in 2008, after an absence from these shores of nearly 900 years.

  • Wife Carrying is a potentially dangerous activity, which could result in injury. All those taking part in the race do so at their own risk.
  • Please follow the instructions of the competition staff and referees on the day.
  • All those taking part must be 18 or over.
  • All those carried must wear a helmet.
  • All entrants will start off at the same time, and the first over the line is the winner. However you will be penalised for dropping your wife.
  • Obstacles and water hazards will be included.
  • You can use any one of the many recognised holds: bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder-ride, fireman's carry (across the shoulders), the well-recognised and very fast Estonian Hold (wife hangs upside-down on man's back, legs crossed in front of the man's face) or the not-so-fast but unique Dorking Hold (the reverse Estonian).

Spectacular Super EnduroCross racing will make its highly anticipated return to the illustrious Dalriada Festival on July 19th 2018. The event which is fast becoming one of the highlights on the Irish Off Road calendar will be back, bigger than ever, when some of the most talented racers will go head-to-head around the testing, purpose built circuit. Racers will have to be on top of their game when navigating multiple logs stacks, rock gardens, huge concrete pipes and even bumper jumps constructed with tractor tyres! Plenty of thrills and spills are guaranteed when this extreme event returns to the Old Quarry in Glenarm; make sure you are there to witness the action for yourself.

For registration and further information please visit www.carrickfergusmcc.co.uk

Online registration is closed. You can still register on the night. Adults £10. U16s £5.

The Dalriada Challenge 5K and 10k Run, in association with Glenlough Running Club, will be staged within Glenarm Village, Castle and Forest. Timing for this year's event will be provided by Champion Chip. This year the race will cater for the more competitive runner with a Steenson's custom hand-made medal for the 1st Male and Female in both the 5k and 10k distances. For those less competitive runners, it will be a relaxed atmosphere where participants can accomplish personal goals and enjoy an evening out with friends and family! This is the ideal event for beginners and experienced runners alike.

The Race Registration and Start/Finish are both on Altmore Street (the wide street leading to the forest gates) but car parking will not be available on this street.  There will be adequate parking around the marina and also at the beach front carpark, both of which are no more than 2 or 3 mins walk from Altmore Street.

Race Registration will be open from 17:00 and close at 18:45 with the race starting at 19:00.  There will be a separate queue for those not having pre-registered.  Last year there was a bit of a last minute rush with people showing up near the close of the sign-on leading to pretty long queues and a bit of a delay on the start, so if you can, try to get here as early as possible.

At Registration you will receive a race number with timing chip attached.

If you are bringing along a competitor taking part in the Under 16 race and you haven't already downloaded the parental consent form, you will be required to fill one of these out as part of the sign on process.

The 10k race will be 2 laps of the route with a water stop as you pass the start/finish to begin the second lap.  The first section of the course is on forest trails and is a little rough in places but normal road running trainers will still be fine.

The run route can be viewed via this GARMIN CONNECT link.

There are public toilets at the beach front carpark and also toilets which will be available in Glenarm Baptist Church, which is near the race sign-on.  The toilets in the church are very limited in their capacity so if you can use the ones at the beachfront to help avoid any bottle necks forming at the toilets.

There are no showering facilities I'm afraid.

As part of the Dalriada Festival week, from 8pm at the Marina there is a free gig, featuring Irish Country Music Superstar, Lisa McHugh.  This was a great event last year with many of the competitors sticking around after the race to watch, so if you don't have to rush away you will be more than welcome to join us.

Hopefully that's everything covered, but if you do have any other questions please feel free to contact us.

Other than that, we look forward to welcoming you on Friday night, see you there!

Terms & Conditions:

  • In the event of an entry being cancelled, the entry fee cannot be refunded, however if you email us before registration closes we can change the name on the entry.
  • Runners compete in the run at their own risk. Dalriada Festival accepts no liability for competitors.
  • All competitors consent to any photographs taken during the event in which they appear being used for promotional purposes associated with Dalriada Festival.
  • U16's will be required to print out the consent form, have it signed by a parent/guardian and bring it to the race sign-on.
  • U12's, in addition to the parental consent form, must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during the race.
